Operating at full steam to make the iPhone 5′s touch screens, TPK Holdings brought in record revenue of more than 11.1 billion Taiwan dollars ($371 million) in August, down a bit from July but up 101 percent from a year ago. Chief Financial Officer Freddie Liu attributed the sales surge to booming shipments of touch panels for the iPhone 4, but “implied” that the company has also been shipping panels for the iPhone 5, according to the news site.
Liu expects sales for the current quarter to hit a record high and then peak in the fourth quarter at the Taipei, Taiwan-based company.

For example: How about letting you sync your phone over wi-fi instead of having to plug in a USB cable? How about being able to access your iTunes music library from anywhere? How about being able to grab some of your iPhoto pictures from the road?

When will it go on sale?
Apple has launched a new iPhone every June or July since the first one went on sale in 2007. We don’t expect anything different this year.
Except that last month, FBR analyst Craig Berger hypothesized that the iPhone 5 launch may be pushed to September because of what he was hearing from the supply chain: “For the iPhone 5, we continue to hear that a July launch is unlikely, with various casing suppliers and touch suppliers still ramping up, with some chip vendors not having yet received firm iPhone 5 orders, and with other sockets like the image sensor … still in flux.”
We believe Apple intends to release the iPhone 5 in the summer, as it has in past years. But anything is possible, including a delay. Though, on the other hand, Apple launched the iPad 2 earlier than expected, albeit in very short supply.
Will iPhone 5 include near field communication (NFC) technology for mobile payments?
One of the major new features expected for the iPhone 5 was supposed to be near field communication (NFC) technology, which would allow you to make a payment or exchange media with another iPhone just by holding it close to another NFC device.
But the iPad 2 has shipped without NFC, and recently the Independent reported that Apple is telling carriers that the iPhone 5 won’t have it, either.
It looks like Apple’s payment revolution will have to wait another year.
Will the iPhone 5 be 4G? Will the phones be hybrid AT&T/Verizon units? Or separate like the iPhone 4 and iPad 2?
We don’t expect the iPhone 5 to support 4G LTE networks. We think Apple will wait until 2012 for that, in order to have the smallest phones and the best battery life.
In theory, there will be a chip someday that lets Apple make a single iPhone that works on both GSM networks like AT&T and CDMA networks like Verizon. Other phones have used these chips for years. But the question is when they will be to Apple’s liking, in terms of size, functionality, and pricing.
This is something we expected for the iPad 2, but Apple instead went with two different 3G lines — separate AT&T and Verizon devices. Perhaps because the dual-mode chips weren’t ready yet. Perhaps because they weren’t cost effective, when the majority of the world doesn’t use CDMA.
Will the iPhone 5 be dual-mode devices? Or just single-mode like existing Apple devices?
Does Apple have another social network up its sleeve? Or will it finally work closer with Facebook?
Is Apple going to continue to move into social networking? We had heard a rumor that it was working on some sort of social app for photo and media sharing, and some code found in an iOS beta called “Media Stream” seems to back that up.
As much as we’d like to see Apple laptop battery make the iPhone more inherently social, we also don’t have much confidence in their understanding of what social tools are all about, how they should be designed, and what makes them fun and useful. Last year, Apple introduced Ping and GameCenter, two social networks. We don’t hear much about them.
So should Apple continue to make its own social tools? Or should it work to integrate existing social networks like Facebook and Twitter deeper into the iOS experience, the way other phones have?
Will it be bigger? Or smaller?
There are regular rumors that Apple is working on smaller or bigger iPhones.
We have no doubt that Apple has tested many sizes of iPhones. And rival HP is launching a tiny phone this year called the Veer. But history has shown that Apple is very happy with the size of the iPhone.
If we had to pick either way, we’d expect an iPhone with a slightly larger screen, not a tiny iPhone nano. Nothing too big — probably not like the massive Android phones from the likes of HTC, Samsung, and others. But a bigger screen could be better for games and movies, so maybe someday Apple will make one.
Still, we wouldn’t hold our breath.

Step 1: Create a folder called Pwnage on your desktop.
Step 2: Download redsn0w from here and put it in the Pwnage folder that you have just created.
Step 3: Also download the iPhone OS 3.0 firmware from the location below and put in under the Pwnage folder.

Apple, Samsung top J.D. Power satisfaction survey

Apple’s iPhone took the top spot in customer satisfaction among smartphones, according to J.D. Power.

Phones from Apple and Samsung topped a J.D. Power satisfaction survey, which cited size, screen quality, battery life, and processing speeds as crucial. The survey also said satisfaction was high for 4G-capable phones.
Apple ranked highest in customer satisfaction among smartphone manufacturers while Samsung was No.1 among traditional mobile phone manufacturers, according to the results of two J.D. Power studies released Thursday.
Satisfaction is tied closely to the weight, size, quality of displays, processing speeds, battery life, and touch screen capabilities, according to the studies.
For example, satisfaction ratings are highest (8.1 on a 10-point scale) for smartphones that don’t exceed 5 ounces. J.D. Power said. But satisfaction averages only 7.6 for smartphones that are 5 ounces or heavier.
The same holds true for traditional phones. Satisfaction peaks between 3 and 3.5 ounces, then drops off when the feature phone weighs 4 ounces or more.
Top rankings:

• Smartphone: Apple ranked highest with a score of 838, HTC was second with 801.
• Feature (traditional) phone: Samsung ranked highest with a score of 718, LG was second with 717.

Criteria for phones that get the highest rating from J.D. Power:

• Weight: Five ounces or under for smartphones; three-and-a-half ounces or under for feature phones.
• Thickness: For smartphones, less than 0.45 inches thick.
• Touch screen: Smartphones rated better with a touch screen only.
• Processor: Phones powered by chips that can manipulate data quickly rated higher.
• Display: Devices with advanced display screens such as Super AMOLED rated higher.
• Camera: At least 5 megapixels for high rating.

Touch screen-only smartphones have “considerably higher satisfaction with ease of operation” (817 points) than either QWERTY keyboard-only based devices or those that have both a touch screen and QWERTY capability (785 and 782 points, respectively), according to the studies.
Fast chips and high-end screens boost scores too. “Faster processing speeds, higher computer chip bit rates, and the most advanced display screens (such as Super AMOLED vs. older LCD-based screens) all add significantly to user satisfaction,” J.D. Power said.
And the survey broke down the factors, in order of importance, that determine satisfaction for traditional phones and smartphones. For traditional phones, the key factors are performance (31 percent), ease of operation (24 percent), physical design (24 percent), and features (20 percent). For smartphones, the key factors in order of importance are performance (35 percent), ease of operation (24 percent), features (21 percent), and physical design (20 percent).
For a sixth consecutive time, Apple ranked highest among manufacturers of smartphones in customer satisfaction, with a score of 838. Apple’s iPhone performed particularly well in ease of operation and features.
Samsung took the honors in overall customer satisfaction for traditional handsets, with a score of 718. Samsung scored well in performance, ease of operation, and features. LG (717), Sanyo (716) and Sony Ericsson (709) followed Samsung.
The studies also said customers are “highly satisfied” with 4G-capable devices. “Satisfaction among customers using 4G-capable phones averages 819, compared with 786 among customers using phones with 3G capability. Owners of 4G devices are also more active in terms of calling, texting, and browsing the Internet.”

iPhone 5 cases flooding the Chinese market reportedly reveal a thin design for Apple’s new Phone, as thin as an iPod Touch.
Pointing to products being sold by online vendor Alibaba and other Chinese retailers, tech enthusiast site M.I.C. Gadget claims that the new cases are everywhere and that “only an iPhone that is as thin as an iPod touch could fit in these cases perfectly.”
Beyond offering the thinner design, the new cases also point to the new iPhone being wider and longer, the mute switch moved to the other side, and the overall form factor tapered with rounded edges more similar to that of the iPod Touch.
Though this sounds like yet another iPhone rumor to be taken with a heaping grain of salt, The Next Web says that the cases have a similar design but come from different manufacturers and sources, so they could be based on “accurate patterns” that have already been sent to iPhone 5 accessory makers.
Similar case designs leaked in July uncovered a thinner design for the new iPhone. And in June, drawings based on reports at This is My Next showed similar “big” changes.

And in yet another potential clue that the iPhone 5 might sport a brand new design, an icon of the iPhone found in the latest beta of Apple’s Photo Stream product shows a bigger screen and an elongated home button, according to 9to5Mac. The design of the icon follows earlier rumors that the new iPhone would come equipped with a larger screen and elongated home button.
This clue definitely sounds like a stretch, though, since the icon’s description mentions the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. So the icon could be designed to try to generically represent all three devices, and not just the iPhone 5.
Taken together or separately, both the new Chinese iPhone cases and the revamped icon aren’t exactly substantial evidence of a new design for the iPhone. Some reports have insisted that the next iPhone will launch as a minor upgrade to the iPhone 4 with a few changes but the same basic features. However, as The Next Web points out, it seems unlikely Apple would wait 18 months to release a new iPhone, only to introduce one that is “basically identical to the current model.”
